BMW announce R nineT and R18 100-year anniversary models

In 1922, BMW chief designer Max Friz penned the first full-scale BMW motorcycle. It featured a two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine and in 1923 it entered production, badged the R 32.

To celebrate their 100 history, BMW Motorrad has unveiled 100-year edition models of the R nineT Roadster and R 18 Cruiser and both models are limited to 1923 units each.

The minimalistic design language of the R nineT has been shaped by 100 years of motorcycle construction and BMW’s unbroken passion for the boxer engine. Classic roadster design prevails with a compact tank and upright seating position as well as high-quality materials and stylish design elements. The special 100-year edition is unique thanks to a variety of special features but retains the two-cylinder air cooled boxer engine which produces 80kW and has been treated to a wide range of optional parts and elaborate surface treatments.

Finishes such as copper, nickel and chrome have been used on motorcycles throughout the ages and now with the BMW R nineT 100 Years and R 18 100 Years and the Classic Chrome surface concept, BMW is reviving this sophisticated interplay of paint and chrome.

Emphasising the classic styling of the R nineT

The tank of the R nineT is a combination of black with chrome and white pin striping and is complemented by knee pads and a 100-year badge. The seat hump is finished in classic chrome and the front wheel cover is painted in black and features white pinstriping. The seat is covered in a two-tone combination of black and oxblood leather. Components such as the fork tubes, air intake and numerous Option 719 components compliment the overall look.

The R nineT 100-year edition is fitted with 719 Classic wheels with black anodized rim rings, Option 719 Shadow milled parts package with milled cylinder head covers, engine housing covers, seat holders, oil filler plug and the Option 719 Shadow II milled parts package. Adaptive turning light and the Comfort Package with heated grips, cruise control and driving modes pro completes the extensive equipment included.

BMW R18 100 years

The unmistakable centrepiece of the R 18 100 years is the 67kW boxer engine featuring the largest displacement on a BMW motorcycle ever. The BMW R 18 takes inspiration from famous BMW models such as the BMW R 5 and places the focus back on the essentials of motorcycling, with purist, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the epicentre of riding pleasure.

The colour scheme of the R 18 100 years, like that of the anniversary model of the R nineT, is in classic chrome and thus combines black paintwork and high-gloss chrome surfaces as well as white pinstriping and a 100-year badge. The paint on chrome concept in classic chrome is also found on the rear wheel cover in combination with pin striping. The Option 719 seat has been upholstered in the bicolour combination of black and oxblood with high quality diamond embossing.

The engine, transmission housing and rear axle drive are finished in Avus black. The design is complimented by numerous chrome parts sourced from the Chrome design option list including the handlebar fittings, gearshift and foot brake levers, handlebar clamps, handlebar weights, mirrors, brake master cylinders, brake callipers, engine casing covers, cylinder head covers and intake manifold trims.

The R 18 100 years is also fitted with chromed Akrapovic rear silencers with perforated tailpipe trims in the propeller style of the BMW brand logo. Safety and comfort are ensured by Headlight Pro with adaptive turning light, reversing aid, electronic cruise control and heated grips.
