BMW M2 unveiled at M Fest SA

BMW recently utilised the occasion of the BMW M Fest held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for the global unveil of the all-new M2. The debut of the M2 marks another highlight in the model offensive that has formed part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of BMW M.

The BMW M2 is set to deliver signature M performance in a highly concentrated form. Thanks to a 338kW six-cylinder in-line engine and optionally available six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, the second generation M2 promises pure driving pleasure.

Compact dimensions as well as powertrain and chassis technology adapted from the BMW M3 and M4 form the basis for the new edition of the two-door model that offers handling and agility that remain controllable even as the driver explores the car’s limits.

The distinct character profile manifests itself in the expressive exterior design and athletic coupe proportions which continue the brands tradition of ultra-sporty models with compact dimensions, that began in 1973 with the arrival of the BMW 2002 turbo.

Powerful proportions

The large frameless BMW kidney grille with horizontal bars combines with a three-section lower air intake to cater for the technical requirements in terms of cooling air supply and aerodynamic balance and give the front end a familiar M look. Clearly designed surfaces, prominently flared side skirts and muscular wheel arches set the tone for the side view. The rear end features a compact, powerful feel which is finished off by a number of unique touches including a boot spoiler, vertically arranged reflectors, a diffuser insert and two pairs of exhaust tailpipes.

Under the bonnet

Differing only slightly from the engine employed in the BMW M3 and M4, the 3.0-litre unit offers 338kW and 550Nm and thrills with its urgent response, healthy appetite for revs and linear power delivery. This power delivery is accompanied by an emotionally rich soundtrack generated by the M-specific exhaust system. 

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard. The gearbox offers extremely sporty gearshifts and the ability to execute multiple downshifts, aiding in instantaneous acceleration. Available as an option is a six-speed manual gearbox for those enthusiasts seeking a performance experience in the classical mould. The new M2 is able to sprint from standstill to 100km/h in 4,1 seconds or 4,3 seconds, depending on the choice of transmission.

Sophisticated chassis technology

Compact dimensions, a short wheelbase, perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution and sophisticated chassis technology combine to deliver precisely controllable handling.

The double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle feature M-specific kinematics while standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, DSC which includes M Dynamic Mode and powerful M compound brakes with six-piston, fixed-calliper brakes at the front and single-piston, floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The M2 rides on light alloys that measure 19-inches upfront and 20-inches at the rear.

Inside story

The cockpit boasts a driver-centric design featuring M-specific readouts, controls and setup options, as well as the advanced BMW Curved Display. Driving related information including shift lights appears in a graphical layout on the 12.3-inch information display and M-specific widgets relating to parameters such as vehicle setup and tyre condition can be called up on the 14.9-inch control display.

Standard sport seats are finished in Sensatec and Alcantara surfaces while M Sport seats with integral head restraints and perforated surfaces in Vernasca leather and Sensatec are available as an alternative.
