What are the features of the new BMW 5 Series: Launching with AirConsole gaming

BMW Group and AirConsole bring a unique gaming experience into the vehicle

BMW have partnered with the gaming platform AirConsole to bring a unique format of in car gaming to the road for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series. This system allows the driver and passenger to play so-called casual games while the vehicle is stationary and is a great way to kill time when waiting for the vehicle to charge, for example. In addition to the new BMW 5 Series, the AirConsole App will be made available for other BMW vehicles too.

For the in-car gaming experience occupants can use their smartphone, which acts as the controller with the gameplay projected onto the BMW Curved Display. After starting the AirConsole app in the vehicle, the connection with the vehicle is established by scanning a QR code on the Curved Display. The AirConsole app supports multiple players simultaneously and passengers in the rear of the vehicle can also participate. It is possible to game alone, or with all vehicle occupants together or in competition mode.

With AirConsole, players can also play so-called casual games, which are games that are easy to pick up and intuitive to control and include racing, sports, quiz and music games as well as simulation, strategy, jump and run and puzzle games. Titles include GoKart Go, Galazo, Music Guess and Overcooked and the offering will be expanded on a continual basis.

The collaboration with AirConsole demonstrates BMW’s ability to rapidly integrate third-party applications into the vehicle. Games are run from the entertainment system and can be delivered to vehicles over the air.

To celebrate the launch of the new BMW 5 Series, a unique BMW i5 with gaming inspired design was unveiled. This livery transforms the BMW 5 Series saloon into the ultimate gaming station both technically and visually. The design symbolises diving into the gaming experience down to the individual pixels while the large pixels are clearly recognisable as a homage to the now iconic 8-bit era of computer games. The overall colour scheme takes its inspiration from the various games available on the AirConsole platform.

The global launch of the BMW 5 Series will commence in October this year. The new model generation will be offered with all-electric drive and, depending on the market region, also with plug-in hybrid systems as well as highly efficient petrol and diesel engines.

A clear and reduced design language emphasises the new 5 Series sedans sporty elegance and presence. Upfront it is characterised by a modern interpretation of the twin headlights and BMW kidney grille, which projects forward and features a wide surround and optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. LED elements arranged almost vertically serve as turn indicators and daytime driving lights. The side view is characterised by a high shoulder line, powerfully designed surfaces and two precisely traced character lines. Black side skirts, flush-mounted door openers and an embossed number 5 at the base of the C-pillar are further eye-catchers. These dynamically stretched proportions flow into a powerful rear end where flat rear lights divided by a chrome strip interpret the hallmark L-shape expressively.

Generous space, modern functionality and a high level of acoustic comfort as well as high quality, precisely processed materials, fine workmanship and advanced digital services characterise the ambience of the interior.

In addition, the interior features a significantly reduced number of buttons and controls compared to its predecessor with the BMW Curved Display reinterpreting the brands hallmark idea of driver orientation. The fully digital system consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control display. The steering wheel has also been redesigned with a flattened lower section and haptic feedback on the control panels and the selector lever on the centre console.

The BMW 5 Series sedan’s characteristic balance between maximum sportiness and high-level long-distance comfort has once again been enhanced with this new edition. At the same time it is facilitating the launch of the next generation of technology in all areas of the vehicle and will no doubt raise the benchmark once it is launched.

The exact South African launch date for the new BMW 5 Series is yet to be confirmed.
