The new BMW Motorrad M 1000 XR

BMW Motorrad have launched the M 1000 XR, a long-distance sports bike designed to meet the highest standards for riding on country roads, when long distance touring or on the race track. The M 1000 XR is the third M model from BMW Motorrad that is based on the S 1000 XR but has been specifically tuned to meet the requirements of a long-distance sports bike.

BMW M is synonymous with racing success and the fascination of high-performance BMW models and is aimed at customers with particularly high demands of performance, exclusivity and individuality.

The proportions of the M 1000 XR are ultra-compact and powerful. Three dimensional surfaces create excitement and a dynamic look. Slim, sleek and extremely aggressive, the M XR’s front end is unmistakable with its new M winglets, designed as quadruple wings. The performance-oriented look is also reflected in the colour concept, with the body in black combined with M colours light blue, dark blue and red.

The M 1000 XR boasts an engine output of 148kW and an empty weight of just 223kg along with suspension technology and aerodynamics designed both for high-performance country road use, extended long-distance trips or fast laps of the racetrack.

As the lightest representative of this crossover segment, the M XR opens up dynamic riding possibilities previously reserved for thoroughbred superbikes.

A focus on performance

The new M XR features a modified water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine based on the engine used in the S 1000 RR, boasting 148kW at 12 750rpm and 113Nm at 11 000rpm. This is paired with a light, compact and precisely shifting six-speed gearbox. The Pro Shift Assistant is fitted as standard for lightning-fast gear changes with virtually no interruption in pulling power. 

The M XR features six riding modes along with the latest generation Dynamic Traction Control that incorporates a six-axis sensor cluster, lean angle sensor and fine adjustments for even more safety and performance when accelerating. Additional electronic rider assist systems include launch control, a pit lane limiter and hill start control pro.

In addition to drive and suspension technology, aerodynamics were also key to the development of this model resulting in the M XR being given winglets on the front side panels to ensure increased stability at high speeds. From a speed of 100km/h they provide an increase in front wheel load of approximately 12kg at 200km/h.

A versatile suspension package

The chassis and suspension are based on that of the S 1000 XR which utilises the aluminium bridge frame as the centrepiece. The M XR is fitted with upside down forks with 45mm slide tubes that incorporate adjustability of the fork’s spring base in conjunction with the standard Dynamic Damping Control suspension strut.

The forks feature an upper fork bridge with an elaborately milled-over handlebar clamp as well as a more front orientated black aluminium tubular handlebar. The fork legs have been modified and are now designed to accommodate the new M brake callipers.

The M brakes were developed from experience gained racing in the Superbike World Championship and feature a blue anodized coating in conjunction with the well-known M logo. Up front these callipers clamp twin 320mm discs that are fitted to lightweight forged aluminium wheels. As part of the M Competition package, the exclusive M Carbon wheels are available with newly designed tapes on the rim. A brake slide function is an innovative system of benefit to track riders as it allows the rider to drift into corners under braking in a constant slide.

The instrument cluster features a perfectly readable 6.5-inch TFT display and offers M start-up animation and an extended display of the red speed range.

The M Competition package offers a fascinating mix of refined components for those that enjoy racing technology as well as for aesthetically minded riders. The M Competition Package includes M Carbon wheels, M Carbon parts such as a rear wheel cover with integrated chain guard, side panels, front wheel cover, inner cover and ignition/steering lock cover as well as a fully adjustable M rider footrest system, passenger footrests and MGPS lap timer.
