BMW 5 Series to become fully electric model

BMW tests fully electric 5 Series in extreme conditions

The eighth generation BMW 5 Series is set to make its debut later this year and promises to be more dynamic and more comfortable than ever thanks to a fresh interpretation of its signature elegantly sporty design.

BMW have announced that the next generation 5 Series sedan and the model line-up will for the first time include a fully electric derivative too. A flexible powertrain architecture means the BMW 5 Series Sedan will be offered in all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants as well as being powered by highly efficient petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild hybrid technology.

The new 5 Series will also be made available as an all-electric BMW M Performance model. The  all-electric BMW i4 M50 was the best-selling BMW model worldwide in 2022 and showcases how BMW blends dynamic performance and electric mobility to perfection. The BMW 5 Series Touring is very popular, especially in Europe and from spring 2024 it will also be available in an all-electric version, which will be a truly unique selling point in this segment.

The global arrival of the BMW i5 sedan in the premium executive segment, followed by the BMW i5 Touring in 2024, will see the BMW Group continue the systematic expansion of its all-electric offering.

Inside the new 5 series will be equipped with BMW Operating System 8.5 with BMW Curved Display, innovative digital services.

The balance of sporty driving pleasure and long-distance comfort has made the BMW 5 Series sedan a worldwide hit. Over the course of 50 years and seven model generations it has established itself as the most successful business sedan in the world thanks to this defining characteristic.

Ahead of its debut the BMW 5 Series i5 derivative was subjected to the ultimate endurance test in winter conditions. The programme of testing on ice and snow lasted a full year, during which development engineers focused on the cars ability to drive at low temperatures and on low grip surfaces.

A large portion of the production development process saw the BMW i5 complete a journey from Munich to the BMW test centre in Arjeplog. This journey of around 3 000 kilometres provided an early opportunity for the motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and battery pack to demonstrate their advanced level of readiness on a long-distance journey. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, forms the basis for long ranges and short charging times even in extreme sub-zero ambient temperatures.

Arjeplog provided the team of development and test engineers with the ideal venue for their test programme and as a result the assured and characteristically sporty handling of the BMW i5 has already been refined.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems underpins the outstanding handling capabilities as the BMW i5 serves up a harmonious blend of optimum traction when pulling away and supreme driving stability when cornering or braking.
