BMW 2 Series goes on sale in South Africa

BMW has started a new chapter in its tradition of sporty compact models with the launch of the new BMW 2 series.

The BMW 2 Series embodies sporty driving in a concentrated form, with a concept that is focussed on dynamic excellence, athletic design, powerful engines and sophisticated chassis technology. 

The combination of a unique appearance, a six cylinder engine option, rear-wheel drive and chassis components carried over from the 4 Series differentiate the 2-series substantially from other models, including the 1-series

Along with noticeable gains in dynamic ability, the BMW 2 Series Coupé offers a premium cabin ambience, cutting edge technology and connectivity as well as the latest in terms of driver assistance systems.

The top of the range BMW 240i xDrive Coupe utilises a 285kW six-cylinder in-line engine and intelligent all-wheel drive to offer an emotionally rewarding driving experience. Customers can also choose from variants fitted with four-cylinder petrol or diesel engines that channel their power to the rear wheels.

A vehicle designed with performance in mind

The fresh, youthful aura of the 2 Series Coupé is complemented by well engineered and perfectly balanced driving attributes. Compact dimensions, a lightweight design and increased torsional rigidity, 50:50 weight distribution and optimised aerodynamics mean that it has all the right ingredients for a vehicle that offers sporting excellence. 

While the agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new 2 Series have been vastly improved at the same time optimised ride comfort and acoustics enhance the cars abilities in both everyday driving and over long-distance journeys.

Distinctive proportions include a classical three-box design of bonnet, passenger compartment and boot. Athletically sculpted surfaces and dynamic lines follow the brands new design language.

Three-dimensional surfaces, triangular forms and diagonal lines shape the front end while prominently flared wheel arches and a muscular power dome at the centre of the bonnet give a clear indication of what lies beneath. The kidney grille is horizontal in design while the LED headlights are positioned in the outer reaches of the front end and like those of the original BMW 02 are a single unit of circular design.

A long bonnet, short overhangs and a set back passenger compartment that rests on powerfully flared wheel arches headline the side view.

Inside story

The driver focussed cockpit design and modern control panel on the centre console accentuate the sporting aura inside. Standard fitment of sport seats and a Sport leather steering wheel feeds into the engaging nature of the driving experience. High-quality materials and precise workmanship create a premium ambience above and beyond that of the predecessor model with Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery as standard fitment

Advanced chassis engineering

Exceptionally sophisticated chassis components ensure supreme drivability while lift-related dampers enhance both the sporting ability and its ride comfort. Standard M Sport suspension means stiffer damper and springs as well as variable sport steering. The flagship BMW M240i xDrive Coupé is also fitted as standard with an M Sport braking system and an M Sport rear differential.

Under the bonnet

The 3.0 litre engine fitted to the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé boasts 285kW and 500Nm, allowing for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.3 seconds.

The BMW 220i Coupé is powered by a new four-cylinder petrol engine that offers 135kW and 300Nm, which translates into a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds while using as little as 6.3 litres per 100km.

The four-cylinder diesel engine fitted to the 220d Coupé has a clear advantage over its predecessor thanks to two-stage turbocharging and 48V mild-hybrid technology. The 2.0-litre unit develops 140kW and 400Nm and results in a 0-100km/h-sprint time of 7.0 seconds while using just 4.7 litres per 100km.

All engines are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission that features brisk gear changes, paddles on the steering wheel, launch control and a Sprint function.

Broad selection of driver assistance systems

An expanded selection of driver assistance systems includes driving Assistant with Lane Change Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Park Distance Control, Reverse Camera and Surround View amongst others.

Advanced connectivity

BMW Operating System 7 offers extended possibilities for driver and passengers as well as a variety of control interfaces including the control display touchscreen, BMW controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel or voice control.

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a fully digital screen grouping, which includes a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel that measures 12.3 inches and a 10.25-inch control display. Live Cockpit Professional includes BMW Maps.
